Historic Hotel
There was a time when Austria still belonged to the seaside. In 1857 the so called „ Südbahn“ from the Südbahngesellschalt was a train going from Vienna through Semmering, Graz, Laibach to Triest and from 1873 also to Rijeka. The first hotels (“Südbahnhotels”) built by the Südbahngesellschaft were the hotels Kvarner and Imperial in the fishing village Abbazia (today Opatija).
Hotel Kvarner is considered the beginning of the tourism tradition in the area and has hosted famous guests like Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I and dancer Isadora Duncan.
Built in neoclassicism style, the architecture of Hotel Kvarner really stands out. The façade has been restored to its original masterful appearance. Large windows allow for wondrous sea views. Hotel Kvarner is the oldest hotel in Opatija and the eastern Adriatic coast. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Opatija and stands out due to its distinct neoclassical style.
The year 2019 marks the beginning of the restoration activities with the intention of the future reconstruction of Hotel Kvarner in order for this heritage hotel to regain its former beauty.
The total of 290 probes were performed on the hotel’s façade, Crystal Hall, foyer, and side wings. During the survey, the hotel’s walls, ceilings, and floors, as well as its woodwork, metalwork, and decorative elements were explored. The exploratory works resulted in the graphic reconstruction of the historical layers and the colour chart of the most important historical coats of paint.

Crystal Hall
Some of the more memorable visions of Opatija are on the grounds of Hotel Kvarner. The Crystal Hall is an awesome architectural sight and the largest of its kind in Opatija. It is an ideal setting for personal events like weddings or business summits.
The Crystal Hall at Hotel Kvarner displays detailed architecture and exudes a magnificent atmosphere as the city's largest ballroom.
